Dosage
- Available in tablet form
- Recommended dosage: 60mg twice daily or 120mg once daily
- Dosage for different age groups: children 6-11 years, children 2-11 years
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
Indications
- Relief of symptoms related to allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)
- Treatment for chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is an inverse agonist of the H1 histamine receptor
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of significant CNS effects
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Increased level in plasma when coadministered with erythromycin or ketoconazole
- No interaction with omeprazole observed
- Reduction in bioavailability when administered with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions: angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnea, flushing, systemic anaphylaxis
- Other reported effects: insomnia, nervousness, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate data for use in pregnant women
- Not recommended during breastfeeding
- No human data on effect on fertility
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in elderly, renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Administer with care in these special groups
- Patients with history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned
- Unlikely to produce significant effects on ability to drive or use machines
Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in patients with renal impairment
- Recommended starting dose in patients with decreased renal function
- No substantial effect in moderate to severe hepatic disease
- Similar adverse events in elderly patients compared to those under 65 years
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No clinically significant adverse reactions at specified doses
- No established maximum tolerated dose
