Indications
- Relief of dry cough
- Pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Acute cough of any etiology
- Whooping cough
- Cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough
- Non-sedating
- Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
- Extremely protein-bound
- Plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 2-3 Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablets daily or 15 ml syrup 4 times daily
- Adolescent dosage: 1-2 Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablets daily or 15 ml syrup 3 times daily
- Children (3-6 yrs) dosage: 5 ml syrup 3 times daily
- Children (6-12 yrs) dosage: 10 ml syrup 3 times daily
- Pediatric dosage: 0.50-0.75 ml drops 4 times daily
Interaction
Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not to be used in the first trimester of pregnancy, caution in later pregnancy and during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid concomitant use with expectorants
- Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms: drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, hypotension
- Emergency procedures: activated charcoal, saline laxatives, cardio-respiratory resuscitation
