Pharmacology

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Exhibits anti-inflammatory properties
  • Exhibits analgesic properties
  • Exhibits antipyretic properties

  • Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis

Dosage & Administration

  • Available in 500 mg & 750 mg tablets
  • Available in 1000 mg tablet
  • Administration: Oral
  • Recommended starting dose: 1000 mg
  • Recommended administration with or without food
  • Maximum starting doses in patients with renal insufficiency
  • Administration in pediatric patients not established

Interaction

  • Diminished antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
  • Consideration for concomitant use with ACE-inhibitors

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
  • Contraindicated in patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Contraindicated for peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal effects: diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, positive stool guaiac, dry mouth, gastritis, stomatitis, vomiting
  • Central Nervous System effects: dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased sweating, insomnia, nervousness, somnolence
  • Dermatologic effects: pruritus, rash
  • Special Senses effects: tinnitus
  • Miscellaneous effects: edema

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • No adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Use during third trimester not recommended
  • Not recommended for use in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Association with renal papillary necrosis and abnormal renal pathology
  • Association with abnormal renal pathology during long-term administration to animals
  • Risk factors for renal toxicity
  • Discontinuation typically followed by recovery

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms of acute NSAIDs overdose
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Rare occurrence of hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma
  • Management by symptomatic and supportive care
  • No specific antidotes
