Ketokid 1 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
• Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
• Alleviating the complications of itching, pain and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
• Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever, urticaria

Pharmacology

• Ketotifen has anti-allergic properties
• Antihistamine properties
• Anti-anaphylactic properties
• Sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
• Prevention of asthmatic attacks
• Long-term clinical trials

Dosage & Administration

• 1 mg twice daily for adults with food
• 1 mg twice daily for children above 3 years with food
• 1-2 mg twice daily for severe cases
• 0.5-1 mg at night for easily sedated patients
• Same as adult dose for elderly

Interaction

• Potentiation of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
• Reversible fall in platelet count with oral antidiabetic agents

Contraindications

• Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents in a few patients
• Recommendations for use in pregnancy or when breastfeeding are not available

Side Effects

• Drowsiness
• Dry mouth
• Slight dizziness

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended in pregnancy and lactation due to lack of evidence on teratogenic effects

Precautions & Warnings

• Minimum 2 weeks continuation of previous treatment after starting Ketokid
• Possible existence of adrenocortical insufficiency in steroid-dependent patients
• Impaired reactions on the first day of treatment
• Avoidance of alcoholic drinks
• Potentiation of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol

Overdose Effects

• Confusion
• Headache
• Bradycardia
• Respiratory depression
• General supportive treatment recommended
