Description

Olmevas is a medication indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It is an angiotensin-ll receptor blocker and can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. The recommended starting dose is 20 mg once daily, and it may be increased to 40 mg for further reduction in blood pressure. Olmevas is generally well tolerated with no significant drug interactions reported.

Indications

  • Treatment of hypertension

Pharmacology

  • Blocks vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking its binding to the AT 1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle

Dosage administration

  • Usual recommended starting dose of 20 mg once daily
  • May be increased to 40 mg if needed
  • No initial dosage adjustment recommended for elderly patients
  • May be administered with or without food

Interaction

  • No significant drug interactions reported in studies
  • Not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system
  • Caution advised with NSAIDs and selective COX-2 inhibitors due to possible deterioration of renal function

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side effects

  • Well tolerated with adverse reactions similar to placebo
  • Incidence of adverse reactions not dose related
  • Withdrawal rate due to adverse reactions was low in controlled trials

Pregnancy lactation

  • Discontinue use in pregnancy as soon as possible
  • Potential excretion in human milk, decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug

Precautions warnings

  • Changes in renal function may be anticipated
  • Treatment may be associated with oliguria, progressive azotemia, and acute renal failure in susceptible individuals

  • Most likely effects include hypotension and tachycardia
