Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
Ketotifen has anti-allergic and antihistamine properties, exerts a sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions, and is effective in preventing asthmatic attacks. It has been shown to reduce the number, severity, and duration of asthma attacks.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food, may be increased to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food, with lower initial dose for easily sedated patients
- Use in elderly: Same as adult dose or as advised by the physician
Interaction
Potentiates the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols, and may cause a reversible fall in platelet count when used concomitantly with oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
Avoid usage with oral antidiabetic agents due to the potential for a reversible fall in platelet count. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient evidence of teratogenic effects.
Precautions & Warnings
- Continue previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Aerofen to avoid exacerbation of asthma
- Use caution when operating vehicles or machinery until the effect of Aerofen treatment is known
- Avoid alcoholic drinks as it may potentiate the effects of certain medications
Overdose Effects
May include confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, and respiratory depression. Gastric lavage or emesis is recommended, with general supportive treatment as required.
