Indications

  • Combined water and sodium depletion
  • Maintenance and replacement of fluid
  • Electrolyte and carbohydrate in patients who are unable to take fluid and nutrients by mouth

Description

  • Sterile solution of Dextrose and Sodium Chloride in water for injection
  • Contains Dextrose Monohydrate equivalent to Dextrose Anhydrous B.P. 5.0 gm and Sodium Chloride B.P. 0.9 gm
  • 5% Dextrose in isotonic Sodium Chloride solution
  • Approximate concentration of sodium and chloride ions in Dextrose is 150 mmol/lit

Dosage

  • Variable dosage depending on clinical condition, age, and body surface area of the patients

Administration

  • Infusion set and infusion solution check
  • Eurocap protective cover tear off
  • Proper handling of Eurocap and bottle body
  • Proper insertion of administration set spike to Eurocap
  • Cleaning and insertion of needle
  • Adjustment of drip speed

Contraindications

  • Patients with known allergy to corn or corn products

Side Effects

  • Febrile response
  • Infection at the site of injection
  • Venous thrombosis or phlebitis
  • Extravasation
  • Hypervolemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • FDA pregnancy category C
  • Unknown effects on unborn baby and nursing baby
  • Caution recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Administered with caution to patients with congestive heart failure, peripheral or pulmonary oedema, impaired renal function, or pre-eclampsia
  • Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
  • Concurrent use of insulin may be needed for diabetic patients
  • Immediate discontinuation if rigor arises
  • Avoid use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or after expiry date
