Description
- Asmafen is indicated for the prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma, symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis, alleviating the complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma, symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever and urticaria.
Dosage
- 1 mg twice daily with food for adults
- 1 mg twice daily with food for children above 3 years
- Same as adult dose for use in elderly
Pharmacology
- Ketotifen has anti-allergic properties, similar to sodium chromoglycate in the prophylactic treatment of asthma, and possesses the properties of an antihistamine.
Interaction
- May potentiate the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
Contraindications
- Reversible fall in the platelet count observed with concomitant use of oral antidiabetic agents
Side effects
- Drowsiness, dry mouth, slight dizziness
Pregnancy lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of evidence on teratogenic effects
Precautions warnings
- Continue previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Asmafen to avoid exacerbation of asthma
- Patients should be warned not to take charge of vehicle or machinery during the first day of treatment
- Avoid alcoholic drinks
