Dosage & Administration
Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food. Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food. The dose may be increased to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases.
Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergies such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
Ketotifen has anti-allergic properties and is used for the prophylactic treatment of asthma. It also has antihistamine properties and exerts a sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions.
Interaction
Ketifen may potentiate the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol. It may also cause a reversible fall in the platelet count when used concomitantly with oral antidiabetic agents.
Contraindications
Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents to prevent a fall in platelet count. Use in pregnancy and lactation is not recommended.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of evidence regarding teratogenic effects.
Precautions & Warnings
- Continue previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Ketifen to avoid exacerbation of asthma
- Avoid alcohol consumption
- May potentiate the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol
