Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
- Anti-allergic properties
- Antihistamine properties
- Anti-anaphylactic properties
- Inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
- Prophylactic activity taking several weeks to become fully established
- Reduction in asthma attacks
Dosage & Administration
- 1 mg twice daily for adults with food
- 2 mg twice daily for severe cases in adults
- 1 mg twice daily for children above 3 years with food
- 0.5 to 1 mg at night for easily sedated patients
- Dosing for elderly same as adults or as advised by physician
Interaction
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
- Reversible fall in platelet count observed in few patients receiving concomitant oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
- Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents
- No evidence of teratogenic effect but not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings
- Continuation of previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Kofen
- Avoidance of alcoholic drinks
- Impaired reactions on the first day of treatment
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol
