Indications

  • Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
  • Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
  • Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
  • Symptomatic treatment of allergies such as hay fever and urticaria

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 1 mg twice daily with food (may be increased to 2 mg in severe cases)
  • Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food (0.5 to 1 mg for easily sedated patients)
  • Use in elderly: Same as adult dose or as advised by the physician

Interaction

  • Potentiation of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol effects
  • Reversible fall in platelet count observed with concomitant use of oral antidiabetic agents

Contraindications

  • Avoidance of concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents
  • Recommendations for use in pregnancy or when breastfeeding cannot be given

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Slight dizziness (at the beginning of treatment)

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation due to lack of evidence regarding teratogenic effects

Precautions & Warnings

  • Continuation of previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting the medication
  • Specific antimicrobial therapy supplementation in case of intercurrent infection
  • Impairment of reactions at the beginning of treatment
  • Advice to avoid alcoholic drinks
  • Potentiation of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol effects
