Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating the complications of itching, pain and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever, urticaria
Pharmacology
- Anti-allergic properties
- Antihistamine properties
- Anti-anaphylactic properties
- Sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
- Prevention of asthmatic attacks
- Effectiveness in reducing asthma attacks
- Progressive reduction of corticosteroids and/or bronchodilators
- Prophylactic activity taking several weeks to become fully established
- Ineffectiveness in aborting established attacks of asthma
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 mg twice daily with food, may be increased to 2 mg in severe cases
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food, potentially starting with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for sedation concerns
- Elderly dosage: Similar to adult dose or as advised by physician
Interaction
- Potentiation of effects with sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol
- Reversible fall in platelet count observed with concomitant use of oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
- Reversible fall in platelet count observed with concomitant use of oral antidiabetic agents
- No evidence of teratogenic effect, but recommendations for use in pregnancy or when breastfeeding cannot be given
Side Effects
- Drowsiness
- Isolated cases of dry mouth
- Isolated cases of slight dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenic effect, but not recommended during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Importance of continuing previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Toma
- Potential exacerbation of asthma if previous treatment is not continued
- Possible existence of adrenocortical insufficiency in steroid-dependent patients
- Warning regarding impairment of reactions during initial treatment days
- Advice to avoid alcoholic drinks
Overdose Effects
- Features may include confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, respiratory depression
- Recommendations for gastric lavage or emesis
- General supportive treatment
