Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating the complications of itching, pain and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever, urticaria
Pharmacology
- Anti-allergic properties
- Antihistamine properties
- Anti-anaphylactic properties
- Sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
- Prevention of asthmatic attacks
- Effectiveness in reducing asthma attacks
- Progressive reduction of corticosteroids and/or bronchodilators
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food
- Dose may be increased to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food
- Elderly dosage same as adult or as advised by the physician
Interaction
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
- Reversible fall in platelet count when taken with oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
- Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents
- Recommendations for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding not given
Side Effects
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Slight dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Continued previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Totifen
- Possibility of exacerbation of asthma if treatment is stopped abruptly
- Advisement against operating vehicles or machinery during initial treatment
- Avoidance of alcoholic drinks
- Recommended caution with sedatives, hypnotics, and antihistamines
Overdose Effects
- Confusion
- Headache
- Bradycardia
- Respiratory depression
- Elimination through gastric lavage or emesis recommended
- General supportive treatment may be required
