  • Common side effects: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions
  • Uncommon side effects: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, sleep disorders
  • Rare side effects: Angioedema, hallucination, liver disorders, memory loss
  • Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
  • Dosage for adults 15 years and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage for pediatric patients 6-14 years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage for pediatric patients 2-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage for pediatric patients 6 months-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily

Pharmacology

    • Action: Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
    • Effects: Airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, altered cellular activity associated with the inflammatory process

Dosage and administration

    • Adults and adolescents dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
    • Pediatric patients dosage 6-14 years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
    • Pediatric patients dosage 2-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
    • Pediatric patients dosage 6 months-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
    • Hepatic insufficiency: No dosage adjustment required for mild-to-moderate insufficiency
    • Renal insufficiency: No dosage adjustment recommended
    • Elderly use: Similar pharmacokinetics to adults, slightly longer plasma half-life

Interaction

  • No clinically important effects with theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, and more
  • Concomitant use with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs in clinical studies

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
  • Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions and warnings

  • Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
  • Appropriate rescue medication should be available
  • Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
  • Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
  • Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm

  • Adverse experiences consistent with the product's safety profile
  • Usual supportive measures recommended in case of overdose
