Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial
- Montelukast inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Leukotriene receptor antagonists
- Common side effects: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions
- Uncommon side effects: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, sleep disorders
- Rare side effects: Angioedema, hallucination, liver disorders, memory loss
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Dosage for adults 15 years and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6-14 years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 2-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 months-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily

Pharmacology
- Action: Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Effects: Airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, altered cellular activity associated with the inflammatory process
Dosage and administration
- Adults and adolescents dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients dosage 6-14 years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients dosage 2-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients dosage 6 months-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
- Hepatic insufficiency: No dosage adjustment required for mild-to-moderate insufficiency
- Renal insufficiency: No dosage adjustment recommended
- Elderly use: Similar pharmacokinetics to adults, slightly longer plasma half-life
Interaction
- No clinically important effects with theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, and more
- Concomitant use with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs in clinical studies
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Pregnancy and lactation
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
- Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions and warnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm

- Adverse experiences consistent with the product's safety profile
- Usual supportive measures recommended in case of overdose
