Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor
- Effects on asthma & allergic rhinitis pathophysiology
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5 mg tablet for 6-14 years, 4 mg tablet for 2-5 years, 4 mg oral granules for 6 months-5 years
- No dosage adjustment for hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on pharmacokinetics of theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, warfarin
- Used concomitantly with various commonly prescribed drugs
- Phenobarbital decreased Aeron FT AUC by 40%
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, haemorrhage, irritability, malaise, muscle complaints, oedema, seizure, abnormal sensation, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, erythema nodosum, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
- No adequate and well-controlled human studies
- Caution needed during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Can be continued during acute asthma exacerbations
- Not for abrupt substitution of corticosteroids
- Not for monotherapy in exercise induced bronchospasm
- Caution in aspirin-sensitive patients
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in majority of reports
- Usual supportive measures recommended in event of overdose
