Pharmacology
Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1).
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients: 5 mg tablet for 6-14 years, 4 mg tablet for 2-5 years, and 4 mg oral granules for 6 months-5 years
Hepatic Insufficiency
No dosage adjustment is required in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency.
Renal Insufficiency
No dosage adjustment is recommended in patients with renal insufficiency.
Elderly Use
The pharmacokinetic profile and oral bioavailability of a single 10-mg oral dose of montelukast are similar in elderly and younger adults. No dosage adjustment in the elderly is required.
Interaction
Aeron has been administered with other therapies routinely used in the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma with no apparent increase in adverse reactions.
Contraindications
Montelukast is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this product.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Montelukast crosses the placenta following oral dosing in rats and rabbits. Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother.
Precautions & Warnings
Aeron is not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks. Patients should have appropriate rescue medication available.
Overdose Effects
In the majority of overdosage reports, there were no adverse experiences. Supportive measures should be employed in the event of overdose.
