Indications

Pharmacology

  • Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist

Dosage and administration

  • Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
  • Pediatric dosage: Montelukast 5 mg for ages 6 to 14 years, 4 mg for ages 2 to 5 years, and 4 mg oral granules for ages 6 months to 5 years

Interaction

  • No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs observed with recommended dosage
  • Caution needed when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product

Side effects

  • Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
  • Uncommon: Anxiety, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints, seizure, sleep disorders
  • Rare: Angioedema, disorientation, hepatic disorders, memory loss, suicidal tendencies, tremor

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution advised when given to a nursing mother

Precautions and warnings

  • Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
  • Rescue medication should be available for acute asthma exacerbations
  • Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma

Overdose effects

  • Usual supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
