Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits cysteinyl leukotriene receptor
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
- Inhibits airway edema and smooth muscle contraction
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5mg tablet for 6-14 years, 4mg tablet for 2-5 years
- Use in pediatric patients established through studies
Drug Interaction
- No clinically important effects with theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, and warfarin
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of adverse interactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting
- Uncommon: Anxiety, arthralgia, abnormal behavior, dizziness, dry mouth, malaise
- Rare: Angioedema, disorientation, hallucination, memory loss, pulmonary eosinophilia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution when given to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm
- Patients with known aspirin sensitivity should continue avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in the majority of reports
- Usual supportive measures to be employed in the event of overdose
