Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)

Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Use in pediatric patients 6 months to 14 years of age with established safety and efficacy profiles
- Hepatic insufficiency and renal insufficiency dosage recommendations
- Elderly use without dosage adjustment
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Concomitant use with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
- Phenobarbital-induced hepatic metabolism decreasing AUC of Maxair
- Clinical monitoring when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common and uncommon side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, skin reactions, abnormal behavior, palpitations, and sleep disorders
- Rare side effects including eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, pulmonary eosinophilia, and suicidal tendencies
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crossing the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution when given to nursing mothers due to potential excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication advised
- Caution when reducing the dose of inhaled corticosteroid
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Caution for patients with known aspirin sensitivity
- Clinical monitoring in the event of overdose

- Majority of overdose reports showing consistent adverse experiences with the safety profile of Maxair
- Usual supportive measures advised in the event of overdose
