Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Treats asthma and allergic rhinitis
- Blocks leukotrienes to keep airways open
- Relieves symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis: Seasonal & Perennial
- Indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Provides acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
Dosage and administration
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Adolescent dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage (6 to 14 years): 5 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage (2 to 5 years): 4 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage (6 months to 5 years): 4 mg oral granules once daily
- No dosage adjustment in mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment in renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs
- Safety and efficacy established in pediatric patients
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
Side effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, nausea, skin reactions
- Uncommon: Anxiety, dizziness, dry mouth, headache
- Rare: Angioedema, disorientation, hallucination, memory loss
Pregnancy and lactation
- Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution exercised when given to nursing mothers
Precautions and warnings
- Not for reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Patients advised to have appropriate rescue medication available
- Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
