Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients:
- Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily (6 to 14 years of age)
- Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily (2 to 5 years of age)
- Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily (6 months to 5 years of age)
- Special Populations:
- Hepatic Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment required with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
- Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment recommended with renal insufficiency
- Elderly use: Similar efficacy to younger adults, slightly longer plasma half-life
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of several drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs
- Phenobarbital induction decreased AUC of Airup approximately 40%
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

- Erythema nodosum
- Hallucination
- Hepatic disorders
- Memory loss
- Palpitations
- Pulmonary eosinophilia
- Suicidal tendencies
- Tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta in animals
- Caution during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Continued therapy during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment of exercise induced bronchospasm
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in the majority of reports
- Employ usual supportive measures in case of overdose
