Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Affects arachidonic acid metabolism
- Selective and orally active
- Dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 2 years to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
- No dosage adjustment required in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment recommended in patients with renal insufficiency
- Usable in pediatric patients with asthma 6 months to 14 years of age
- Administered with other therapies used in asthma treatment
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Does not have clinically adverse interactions with various commonly prescribed drugs
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
- Common side effects: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon side effects: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness
- Rare side effects: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, suicidal tendencies, tremor
- Crosses the placenta following oral dosing in rats and rabbits
- No well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Exercise caution when given to a nursing mother
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Effective in improving airway function in asthmatics with aspirin sensitivity
- Not shown to truncate bronchoconstrictor response to aspirin in aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients
- No adverse experiences in the majority of overdosage reports
- Used for treatment of Leukotriene receptor antagonists
