Description
- A selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB), relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR) including seasonal & perennial AR
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
- Store in cool & dry place below 30°C, protect from light & moisture
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents: 10 mg tablet once daily; Pediatric patients: 5 mg for 6 to 14 years, 4 mg for 2 to 5 years, 4 mg oral granules for 6 months to 5 years
- Safety and efficacy established in pediatric patients with asthma 6 months to 14 years of age
- No dosage adjustment required in mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency or renal insufficiency; Elderly use possible without dosage adjustment
Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Inhibits cysteinyl leukotrienes and leukotriene receptor occupation correlated with asthma & allergic rhinitis pathophysiology
Interaction
- Administered with other therapies routinely used in asthma treatment without increase in adverse reactions
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs observed
- Co-administered with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
- Phenobarbital decreased the AUC of Montril approximately 40%
- Appropriate clinical monitoring recommended when potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers are co-administered
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised when given to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Patients with known aspirin sensitivity should continue avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents while taking Montril
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in majority of overdosage reports
- Adverse experiences consistent with the safety profile of Montril observed
- Supportive measures like remove unabsorbed material, clinical monitoring, and supportive therapy may be employed
