Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
- Inhibition of airway edema and smooth muscle contraction
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 6 months to 14 years of age
- No dosage adjustment in hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly patients
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Used concomitantly with commonly prescribed medications
- Phenobarbital induced hepatic metabolism
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, headache, nausea
- Uncommon: Anxiety, dizziness, malaise
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
- Caution during pregnancy and nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for corticosteroids
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in the majority of reports
- Usual supportive measures in the event of overdose
