Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma

- Relief of symptoms of Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor
- Cysteinyl leukotrienes have been correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric patients: 4-5 mg tablet or oral granules once daily
- No dosage adjustment for hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly
Interaction
- No apparent increase in adverse reactions when administered with other asthma therapies
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, malaise, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in animals, caution advised during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of adequate studies
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in majority of overdosage reports
- Usual supportive measures to be employed in case of overdose
