Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Treats asthma and allergic rhinitis
- Blocks leukotrienes to keep airways open
- Can be taken with or without food
- Effect can be observed after 1-3 hours
- Effect lasts for an average duration of 24 hours
- Should not be used in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5 mg tablet for 6 to 14 years old, 4 mg tablet for 2 to 5 years old, 4 mg oral granules for 6 months to 5 years old
Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
Interaction
- Clinically non-important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- No evidence of clinical adverse interactions with commonly prescribed drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, seizure
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Patients with known aspirin sensitivity should continue avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents while taking it
Overdose Effects
- Most frequently occurring adverse experiences: abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, psychomotor hyperactivity
