Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma

Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5 mg for 6-14 years, 4 mg for 2-5 years, 4 mg oral granules for 6 months to 5 years
- Safety and efficacy studies in pediatric patients
- No dosage adjustment for hepatic insufficiency or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of specific drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs
- Phenobarbital decreased the AUC of Telukast approximately 40%
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, hallucination
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution during pregnancy and lactation due to limited studies in pregnant women and excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Continued avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for patients with known aspirin sensitivity
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in the majority of overdosage reports
- Usual supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
