Indications
- Prophylactic management of mild, moderate, or severe asthma in adults or children
- Effective anti-inflammatory action in the lungs
- Lower incidence and severity of adverse effects than systemic corticosteroids
Pharmacology
- Produces anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects
- Mechanisms responsible for anti-inflammatory action are unknown
- Pro-drug with weak glucocorticoid receptor binding affinity
Dosage
- For oral inhalation use only
- Usual starting dose for adults is 200 micrograms twice a day
- Usual starting dose for children is 50 to 100 micrograms two to four times daily
Administration
- Correct and regular use can prevent or lessen the severity of asthma attacks
- Instructions for effective use according to National Asthma Guidelines for Medical Practitioners
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any components
- Special care necessary in patients with active or quiescent pulmonary tuberculosis
Side Effects
- Systemic effects may occur, particularly at high doses for prolonged periods
- Possible systemic effects include Cushing's syndrome, growth retardation, decrease in bone mineral density
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Inadequate evidence of safety in human pregnancy
- Potential hazards to the mother and baby should be weighed against therapeutic benefits
Precautions & Warnings
- Proper use of the inhaler should be instructed and checked
- Inhaler has to be used regularly, every day, even when asymptomatic
