Indications
- Maintenance and replacement of fluid, electrolyte, and carbohydrate in patients unable to take oral fluids and nutrients
- Treatment of combined water and sodium depletion
- Suitable medium of Sodium Chloride isotonic to body fluid
Description
- Sterile solution of Dextrose and Sodium Chloride in water for injection
- Contains Dextrose Monohydrate equivalent to Dextrose Anhydrous B.P. 5.0 gm and Sodium Chloride B.P. 0.9 gm
- Represents 5% Dextrose in isotonic Sodium Chloride solution
- Approximate concentration of sodium and chloride ions in Dextrose is 150 mmol/lit
Dosage
- Variable dose depending on clinical condition, age, and body surface area of the patient
Administration
- Infusion set and solution should be checked prior to use
- Specific instructions for Eurocap removal and administration set attachment
- Cleaning and securing the venipuncture site
- Adjusting drip speed during infusion
Contraindications
- Known allergy to corn or corn products
Side Effects
- Febrile response
- Infection at the site of injection
- Venous thrombosis or phlebitis
- Extravasation and hypervolemia

- FDA pregnancy category C
- Unknown effect on unborn baby and nursing baby
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in congestive heart failure, oedema, impaired renal function or pre-eclampsia
- Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
- Concurrent use of insulin in diabetic patients
- Immediate discontinuation if rigor arises
- Avoid use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or after expiry date
