Indications
- Combined water and sodium depletion
- Maintenance and replacement of fluid, electrolyte, and carbohydrate in patients unable to take nutrients orally
Description
- Sterile solution of Dextrose and Sodium Chloride in water for injection
- Contains 5% Dextrose in isotonic Sodium Chloride solution
- Approximate concentration of sodium and chloride ions in Dextrose is 150 mmol/lit
Dosage
- Variable dose depending on clinical condition, age, and body surface area of patients
Administration
- Infusion set and solution check prior to use
- Step-wise instructions for connecting administration set, inserting needle, cleaning site, and adjusting drip speed
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to corn or corn products
Side Effects
- Possible reactions include febrile response, infection at injection site, venous thrombosis, phlebitis, extravasation, and hypervolemia

- FDA pregnancy category C
- Unknown effect on unborn baby, caution advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with congestive heart failure, peripheral or pulmonary edema, impaired renal function, or pre-eclampsia
- Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
- Immediate discontinuation if rigor arises during infusion
- Do not use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or after expiry date
