Indications

  • Combined water and sodium depletion
  • Maintenance and replacement of fluid, electrolyte, and carbohydrate in patients unable to take nutrients orally

Description

  • Sterile solution of Dextrose and Sodium Chloride in water for injection
  • Contains 5% Dextrose in isotonic Sodium Chloride solution
  • Approximate concentration of sodium and chloride ions in Dextrose is 150 mmol/lit

Dosage

  • Variable dose depending on clinical condition, age, and body surface area of patients

Administration

  • Infusion set and solution check prior to use
  • Step-wise instructions for connecting administration set, inserting needle, cleaning site, and adjusting drip speed

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to corn or corn products

Side Effects

  • Possible reactions include febrile response, infection at injection site, venous thrombosis, phlebitis, extravasation, and hypervolemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • FDA pregnancy category C
  • Unknown effect on unborn baby, caution advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with congestive heart failure, peripheral or pulmonary edema, impaired renal function, or pre-eclampsia
  • Careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration
  • Immediate discontinuation if rigor arises during infusion
  • Do not use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or after expiry date
