Indications
- Regular treatment of asthma
- Use in patients not adequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and 'as needed' inhaled short-acting β2-agonist or already adequately controlled on both inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting β2-agonist
Interaction
- Avoid non-selective and selective β-blockers in patients with asthma
- Clinically significant drug interactions unlikely after inhaled dosing
- Care should be taken when co-administering known strong CYP3A4 inhibitors
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to salmeterol xinafoate, fluticasone propionate, or any of the excipients
- Contraindicated in the primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma
Side Effects
- Tremor, subjective palpitations, headache, cardiac arrhythmia, hypersensitivity reactions, oropharyngeal irritation, muscle cramps
- Hoarseness, candidiasis, cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, facial and oropharyngeal edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Consideration during pregnancy and lactation if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the fetus or child
- Insufficient experience in human pregnancy and lactation
- Low concentrations in human breast milk supported by animal studies
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid initiation in patients during exacerbation or with unstable asthma
- Continued treatment with medical advice if symptoms remain uncontrolled or worsen
- Vigilance for the possible development of pneumonia in patients with COPD
Use in Special Populations
- Orally inhaled corticosteroids may cause a reduction in growth velocity when administered to pediatric patients
- Long-term effects of growth reduction are unknown
Overdose Effects
