Indications

• Regular treatment of asthma
• Combination product for long-acting β2-agonist and inhaled corticosteroid
• Asthma patients not adequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and short-acting β2-agonist
• Asthma patients already adequately controlled on both inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting β2-agonist

Pharmacology

• Selective, long-acting beta-2 agonist
• Corticosteroid with mainly glucocorticoid activity
• Salmeterol protects against symptoms
• Fluticasone Propionate improves lung function
• More convenient regime for patients on concurrent β-agonist and inhaled corticosteroid therapy

Contraindications

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not to be initiated during asthma exacerbation or unstable asthma

• Vigilance for possible development of pneumonia in COPD patients
• Possible systemic effects with inhaled corticosteroid

Use in Special Populations

• Reduction in growth velocity in paediatric patients receiving orally inhaled corticosteroids
• Unknown long-term effects on final adult height

• Monitoring for adrenal suppression in case of Fluticasone Propionate overdose
