Indications
- Relieves dry (non-productive) cough
- Pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Acute cough relief
- Treatment of whooping cough
- Relief from cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough
- Safe and non-sedating
- Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
- Maximum concentration reached within 9 hours with sustained-release tablet
- Extremely protein-bound
- Plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours
- Active metabolites with antitussive action
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose: 2-3 Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablets daily
- Adult syrup dose: 15 ml 4 times daily
- Adolescent dose: 1-2 Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablets daily
- Children (3-6 yrs) syrup dose: 5 ml 3 times daily
- Children (6-12 yrs) syrup dose: 10 ml 3 times daily
- Adolescent syrup dose: 15 ml 3 times daily
- Pediatric drops dose for 2 months-1 yr: 0.50 ml 4 times daily
- Pediatric drops dose for 1-3 yrs: 0.75 ml 4 times daily
Interaction
Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo observed in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid use during first trimester of pregnancy, caution during remainder of pregnancy, careful weighing of benefits and risks during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid concomitant use with expectorants
- Consult doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years of age)
Overdose Effects
Symptoms include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension
