Indications
- Used for combined water and sodium depletion
- Provides dextrose as a nutrient in suitable medium of sodium chloride
- Used in maintenance and replacement of fluid, electrolyte, and carbohydrate
Description
- Sterile solution of dextrose and sodium chloride in water for injection
- Each 100ml contains 5.0 gm Dextrose Monohydrate and 0.9 gm Sodium Chloride
- Represents 5% dextrose in isotonic sodium chloride solution
Dosage
- Variable dose depending on clinical condition, age, and body surface area
Administration
- Infusion set and solution should be checked prior to use
- Administrative steps for opening flow regulator and inserting the spike of the administration set
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to corn or corn products
Side Effects
- Possible reactions include febrile response, infection, venous thrombosis, extravasation, and hypervolemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- FDA pregnancy category C
- Not known whether dextrose 5% in water will harm an unborn baby
- Not known whether it passes into breast milk or could harm a nursing baby
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution to patients with congestive heart failure, peripheral or pulmonary edema, impaired renal function, or pre-eclampsia
- Need for careful monitoring of serum glucose concentration and potential concurrent use of insulin
