Indications
- Relieves dry (non-productive) cough
- Used for pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Can be used in acute cough of any etiology
- Effective for whooping cough
- Suitable for cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough
- Safe and non-sedating
- Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
- Maximum concentration is reached within 9 hours with sustained-release tablet
- Extremely protein-bound with about 13 hours plasma elimination half-life
Dosage & Administration
- Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet - 2-3 tablets daily for adults
- Butamirate Citrate syrup - 15 ml 4 times daily for adults
- Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet - 1-2 tablets daily for adolescents over 12 years old
- Butamirate Citrate syrup - 5ml 3 times daily for children (3-6 yrs)
- Butamirate Citrate syrup - 10ml 3 times daily for children (6-12 yrs)
- Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops - 0.50 ml 4 times daily for children (2 months-1 yr)
Interaction
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance observed
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea and vertigo in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Cautionary use during the remainder of pregnancy if indicated by a physician
- Benefits during breastfeeding should be weighed against the risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid concomitant use with expectorants to prevent mucus retention
- Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years of age)
Overdose Effects
- Accidental overdose symptoms include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension
- Emergency procedures include activated charcoal, saline laxatives, and standard cardio-respiratory resuscitation
