Coldflu 10 mg/5 ml (Syrup)

Indications

• Chronic dry cough
• Unproductive cough
• Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep

Composition

• Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide BP 10 mg per 5 ml sugar-free syrup

Pharmacology

• Cough suppressant with central action on cough center in medulla
• Rapid absorption from GI tract
• Metabolized in liver
• Excreted in urine
• Duration of action 3-6 hours
• Little sedative activity
• No analgesic properties

Dosage & Administration

• Adults and Children over 12 years: 15-30 mg three to four times per day
• Children 6-12 years: 5-15 mg up to four times per day
• Children 2-6 years: 2.5-5 mg up to four times per day

Interaction

• Two fatal interactions reported with phenelzine
• Therapeutic doses caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors

Contraindications

• Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• Caution in liver disease

Side Effects

• Rare adverse effects
• Nausea and dizziness possible
• No analgesia or addiction
• Little CNS depression
• Overdosage may cause excitation, confusion, respiratory depression

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoid in first three months of pregnancy
• Avoid use if breastfeeding due to lack of information

Precautions & Warnings

• Do not use for cough associated with smoking, asthma, or emphysema
• Do not use for productive cough
