Indications
- Chronic dry cough
- Unproductive cough
- Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep
Composition
- Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide BP 10 mg
Pharmacology
- Cough suppressant
- Central action on cough center in medulla
- Rapid absorption from GI tract
- Little sedative activity
- Metabolized in the liver and excreted in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and Children over 12 years: 15-30 mg three to four times per day
- Children between 6 and 12 years: 5-15 mg up to four times per day
- Children between 2 and 6 years: 2.5-5 mg up to four times per day
Interaction
- Fatal interactions with phenelzine reported
Contraindications
- Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Caution in patients with liver disease
Side Effects
- Rare adverse effects
- Nausea and dizziness sometimes occur
- No analgesia or addiction
- Little or no CNS depression
- Excitation, confusion and respiratory depression with overdosage
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in first three months of pregnancy
- Caution in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not use for smoking, asthma, or emphysema-related cough
- Not for productive coughs
