Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of upper and lower respiratory tracts
- Asthmatic bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
- Inflammatory disease of rhinopharyngeal tract
Pharmacology
- Ambroxol as the active metabolite of bromhexine
- Improves sputum rheology by hydrating mechanism
- Stimulates production of phospholipids of surfactant by alveolar cells
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Has anti-inflammatory properties
- Improves airway patency in patients with COPD
Dosage & Administration
- Average daily dose preferably after meal
- Dosage varies for pediatric drops, syrup, and sustained-release capsules
Interaction
- Not to be taken simultaneously with antitussives like Codeine
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain and stomach overfill feeling may occur occasionally
- Rarely allergic responses such as eruption, urticaria or angioneurotic edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No harmful effect of Ambroxol in teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies
- Advised not to use in pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester
- Safety during lactation has not been established
Precautions & Warnings
- Give cautiously to patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration or convulsive disorders
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency
