Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of upper and lower respiratory tracts
- Inflammatory disease of rhinopharyngeal tract
- Asthmatic bronchitis with thick expectoration
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
Pharmacology
- Greater bronchosecretolytic effect than bromhexine
- Improves sputum rheology by hydrating mechanism
- Liquefaction of mucus in the lumen of respiratory tract
- Facilitates expectoration of mucus
- Reduces dyspnea
- Stimulates production of phospholipids of surfactant by alveolar cells
- Contributes to the lowering of superficial tension in the alveoli
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Has anti-inflammatory properties
- Improves airway patency in patients with COPD
Dosage & Administration
- Average daily dose preferably after a meal
- Pediatric drops for different age groups
- Syrup for different age groups
- Sustained release capsule dosage for adults and children over 12 years old
Interaction
- Should not be taken simultaneously with antitussives
- Phlegm liquefied by Hybrox might not be expectorated if taken with antitussives
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain, stomach overfill feeling
- Occasional occurrence of gastrointestinal side effects
- Rare allergic responses like eruption, urticaria, or angioneurotic edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies showed no harmful effect of Ambroxol
- Advised not to use it in pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester
- Safety during lactation not established yet
Precautions & Warnings
- Give cautiously to patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration or convulsive disorders
- Patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency should take it with caution
