Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of upper and lower respiratory tracts
- Inflammatory disease of rhinopharyngeal tract
- Asthmatic bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
Pharmacology
- Greater bronchosecretolytic effect than bromhexine
- Improves sputum rheology
- Hydrating mechanism leading to liquefaction of mucus
- Facilitates expectoration of mucus
- Reduces dyspnea
- Stimulates production of phospholipids of surfactant by alveolar cells
- Contributes to the lowering of superficial tension in the alveoli
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Anti-inflammatory properties
Dosage & Administration
- Dosing varies by age group
- Preferably given after meal
- Different dosages for pediatric drops, syrup, and sustained-release capsule
Interaction
- Should not be taken simultaneously with antitussives
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine

- Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain and stomach overfill feeling

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No harmful effect shown in teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies
- Advised not to use in pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester

Precautions & Warnings
- Cautious use in patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration or convulsive disorders
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency
