Indications
- Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Expectoration in acute bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchial asthma
- Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchiectasis
- Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
- Drainage in chronic sinusitis
- Drainage in otitis media with effusion
Pharmacology
- Reduces viscosity of non-infected secretions from mucous cells in the respiratory tract
- Breaks disulphide bonds which cross-link certain glycoprotein molecules present in the mucus
- Alters local ionic charges affecting the viscosity of mucus
- Alters the composition of mucin secreted by the respiratory mucosa
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage of 2250 mg daily in divided doses for adults
- Reduced to 1500 mg daily in divided doses when a satisfactory response has been obtained
- Normal daily dose is 20 mg/kg body weight in divided doses for children
- 62.5-125 mg 4 times daily for 2-5 years old
- 250 mg 3 times daily for 6-12 years old

- No hazardous or therapeutically useful interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration and in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy
