Description
- Mucolex Tablets are used to reduce the viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract and are indicated for expectoration in diseases such as upper respiratory inflammation, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic sinusitis, and otitis media with effusion.
Indications
- Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Expectoration in acute bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchial asthma
- Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchiectasis
- Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
- Drainage in chronic sinusitis
- Drainage in otitis media with effusion
Mode of Action
- Reduces viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract
- Breaks disulphide bonds which cross-link certain glycoprotein molecules present in the mucus
- Alters local ionic charges affecting the viscosity of mucus
- Alters the composition of mucin secreted by the respiratory mucosa
Dosage & Administration
- Adults (including elderly): Initial dosage of 2250 mg daily in divided doses
- Adults (including elderly): Reduced to 1500 mg daily in divided doses when a satisfactory response obtained
- Children: Normal daily dose is 20 mg/kg body weight in divided doses
Interaction
- No hazardous or therapeutically useful interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy
