Description

  • Mucolex Tablets are used to reduce the viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract and are indicated for expectoration in diseases such as upper respiratory inflammation, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic sinusitis, and otitis media with effusion.

Indications

  • Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
  • Expectoration in acute bronchitis
  • Expectoration in bronchial asthma
  • Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
  • Expectoration in bronchiectasis
  • Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Drainage in chronic sinusitis
  • Drainage in otitis media with effusion

Mode of Action

  • Reduces viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract
  • Breaks disulphide bonds which cross-link certain glycoprotein molecules present in the mucus
  • Alters local ionic charges affecting the viscosity of mucus
  • Alters the composition of mucin secreted by the respiratory mucosa

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults (including elderly): Initial dosage of 2250 mg daily in divided doses
  • Adults (including elderly): Reduced to 1500 mg daily in divided doses when a satisfactory response obtained
  • Children: Normal daily dose is 20 mg/kg body weight in divided doses

  • No hazardous or therapeutically useful interactions reported

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug
