Indications
- Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Expectoration in acute bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchial asthma
- Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchiectasis
- Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
- Drainage in chronic sinusitis
- Drainage in otitis media with effusion
Pharmacology
- Reduces viscosity of non-infected secretions from mucous cells in the respiratory tract
- Breaks disulphide bonds in mucus
- Alters local ionic charges affecting mucus viscosity
- Alters the composition of mucin secreted by respiratory mucosa
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Based on initial dosage of 2250 mg daily in divided doses
- Adult dosage: Reduced to 1500 mg daily in divided doses after a satisfactory response
- Children's dosage: Normal daily dose is 20 mg/kg body weight in divided doses
- Children's dosage: 2-5 years: 62.5-125 mg 4 times daily
- Children's dosage: 6-12 years: 250 mg 3 times daily
- Infants: Dosage has not been established

Contraindications
Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration and in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug
