Indications

• Fast & effective relief of Chest congestion
• Cough
• Sore throat

Pharmacology

• Expectorant - Guaifenesin
• Cough suppressant - Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
• Local anesthetic - Menthol

Dosage & Administration

• Adult use only (12 years and over)
• 2 teaspoonful syrup (10 ml) every 6 hours
• Maximum 8 teaspoonful syrup (40 ml)/day

Interaction

• Possible reactions with specific drugs like acetaminophen/hydrocodone
• diphenhydramine
• escitalopram
• acetaminophen/codeine
• alprazolam
• ondansetron

Contraindications

• Not to be used with a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
• Not for use two weeks after stopping the MAOI drug

Side Effects

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Gastrointestinal disturbance
• Feeling nervous, restless, anxious, or irritable

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA

Precautions & Warnings

• Consult doctor if having asthma, chronic lung disease, shortness of breath, or persistent/chronic cough
• Not to be taken with MAO inhibitor drugs

Overdose Effects

• Gastric emptying recommended for overdosage with guaifenesin
• Excitement and mental confusion may occur with Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide overdosage
• Harmful effects of menthol in large amounts including abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and rapid breathing
