Indications

  • Symptomatic relief of upper respiratory tract disorders
  • Productive cough relief
  • Nasal decongestant use
  • Histamine H1 receptor antagonist use
  • Expectorant use

Pharmacology

  • Pseudoephedrine as decongestant and bronchodilator
  • Pseudoephedrine's alpha and beta adrenergic receptor agonist actions
  • Pseudoephedrine's vasoconstriction mechanism
  • Pseudoephedrine's bronchial relaxation mechanism
  • Pseudoephedrine's norepinephrine-releasing effect
  • Guaifenesin as an expectorant
  • Guaifenesin's reduction of sputum viscosity
  • Triprolidine as an antihistamine
  • Triprolidine's symptomatic relief of hypersensitivity reactions

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 10 ml (2 teaspoonful) three times a day
  • Children 6-12 years dosage: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) three times a day
  • Children 2-5 years dosage: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful) three times a day
  • Prefer physician's advice for children aged less than 2 years

Interaction

  • Concomitant use cautions with sympathomimetic agents
  • Cautions with monoamine oxidase inhibitors
  • Partial reversal of hypotensive action by sympathetic activity interfering drugs

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to constituents
  • Cardiovascular disease including hypertension
  • Lower respiratory symptoms including asthma
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) therapy

Side Effects

  • CNS depression or excitation
  • Drowsiness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Hallucinations
  • Skin rashes with or without irritation
  • Tachycardia
  • Dryness of mouth, nose and throat

  • Caution in use during pregnancy
  • Balancing potential benefits against possible hazards to the fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Potential drowsiness
  • Advice against driving or operating machinery if affected
  • Cautions with alcohol or other centrally acting sedatives
  • Use caution in mild to moderate hypertension patients
  • Cautions in hypertension and heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism patients
  • Cautions in elevated intra-ocular pressure, prostatic enlargement, severe renal and hepatic impairment patients
  • Not to be used for persistent or chronic cough without physician's direction

Overdose Effects

  • Acute toxicity effects
  • Drowsiness, irritability, restlessness, lethargy, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort, respiratory depression, convulsion, tremor, tachycardia, hypertension
  • Necessary measures to maintain and support respiration and control convulsion in overdose
  • Gastric lavage and catheterization of bladder may be necessary
