This medicine provides symptomatic relief for upper respiratory tract disorders accompanied by productive cough. It contains a nasal decongestant, a histamine H1 receptor antagonist, and an expectorant combination.
The decongestant pseudoephedrine acts as a bronchodilator and provides relief from nasal congestion by stimulating alpha and beta adrenergic receptors. It also releases norepinephrine, indirectly leading to vasoconstriction.
Guaifenesin functions as an expectorant by reducing the viscosity of bronchial secretions, thus facilitating easier expectoration.
Triprolidine, an antihistamine, offers relief from symptoms of hypersensitivity reactions such as rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and urticaria.
The dosage and administration vary depending on age, with the recommended dose being 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) three times a day for adults and children over 12 years. It is contraindicated for individuals with known hypersensitivity to its constituents, cardiovascular disease, lower respiratory symptoms including asthma, and those undergoing monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) therapy.
Potential side effects include CNS depression or excitation, drowsiness, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, skin rashes, tachycardia, dryness of mouth, nose and throat.
The medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation, and patients should be advised against driving or operating machinery if affected by drowsiness.
