Albumin Human 20% (IV Infusion)

Indications

• Emergency treatment of shock
• Treatment of burns
• Hypoproteinemia with or without edema

Pharmacology

• Contribution to plasma colloid oncotic pressure
• Transport function for hormones, enzymes, medicines, and toxins
• Antioxidant properties
• Free radical scavenging
• Capillary membrane integrity maintenance

Dosage & Administration

• For intravenous administration only
• May be diluted with 5% glucose or 0.9% sodium chloride
• Adjust concentration, dosage, and infusion rate to individual patient's requirements
• Different doses for different indications like hypovolemia, hypoalbuminemia, ascites, OHSS, ARDS, and burns

Interaction

• Should not be mixed with protein hydrolysates or alcoholic solutions
• Risk of atypical reactions to ACE inhibitors in patients undergoing therapeutic plasma exchange

Contraindications

• Severe anemia
• Cardiac failure
• History of allergic reactions to human albumin

Side Effects

• Allergic or pyrogenic reactions characterized by fever, chills, rash, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, and hypotension
• Vascular overload with resultant pulmonary edema if administered rapidly

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Category C - potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus

Precautions & Warnings

• Hypertension or low cardiac reserve
• Monitor for signs of cardiac overload in injured or postoperative patients
• May carry risk of viral transmission
• Individualized volume admin and rate of infusion
• Relevant for pregnancy and lactation

Use in Special Populations

• No clinical studies in pediatric patients
• Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
