Indications
- Treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty in falling asleep
- Treatment of frequent nocturnal awakenings
- Management of early morning awakenings
- Treating recurring insomnia
- Improving poor sleeping habits
- Restful sleep in acute or chronic medical situations
Pharmacology
- Flurazepam as a benzodiazepine derivative
- Hypnotic agent
- Does not decrease dream time as measured by rapid eye movements
- Decreases sleep latency
- Reduces number of awakenings
- Increases total sleep time
- Binds to allosteric site on GABA-A receptors
- Potentiates action of GABA on GABA-A receptors
- Opens chloride channel within the receptor
- Causes chloride influx and hyperpolarization
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dosage: 30 mg at bedtime
- Reduced dosage of 15 mg may be sufficient in some patients
- 15 mg dosage sufficient for elderly or debilitated patients
- Not recommended for children
- Dosage reduction in hepatic and renal impairment
Interaction
- Potentiates other CNS depressants
- CNS depressants include alcohol, barbiturates, sedative antidepressants, antihistamines, and antipsychotic drugs
- Cimetidine moderately prolongs active metabolite half-life
- Antacids may delay benzodiazepine absorption
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or any other ingredients

- Risk of oversedation

- Precautions for severely depressed patients
- Precautions for patients with chronic pulmonary insufficiency

- Somnolence
