Description

Dormax is indicated for short-term treatment of insomnia and sedation in premedication before surgical or diagnostic procedures.

Mode of Action

  • Exerts a sleep-inducing, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle-relaxant effect by increasing the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system

Pharmacology

  • Benzodiazepines such as midazolam bind to the benzodiazepine site on GABA-A receptors, potentiating the effects of GABA by increasing the frequency of chloride channel opening

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral dosage for adults: 7.5-15 mg daily
  • Intravenous administration for endoscopic or cardiovascular procedures: Initial dose of approximately 2.5 mg in healthy adults
  • Intramuscular administration for adults: 0.07-0.1 mg/kg body weight

Interaction

  • Dormax can enhance the central sedative effect of neuroleptics, tranquillizers, antidepressants, and other drugs

Contraindications

  • Severe respiratory insufficiency
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Sleep apnea syndrome
  • Known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or any component of the product

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness, confusion, fatigue, headache, muscle weakness
  • Fluctuations in vital signs including respiratory depression and variations in blood pressure and pulse rate

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should be avoided during pregnancy unless there is no safer alternative
  • Passes into breast milk, so should not be administered to breastfeeding mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Dormax IV should be administered very slowly

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to coma, cardiorespiratory depression, and apnea
  • Can be controlled with benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil
