Indications
- Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
- Treatment of osteoporosis in men
- Increases bone mass and reduces fractures
Pharmacology
- Alendronate Sodium acts as a specific inhibitor of osteoclast mediated bone resorption
- Requires administration at least 30 minutes before breakfast
- Shows preferential localization to sites of bone resorption
Dosage
- Recommended dosage for postmenopausal women
- Recommended dosage for men with osteoporosis
Administration
- Must be taken at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication of the day
- Should be swallowed with a full glass of water upon rising for the day
Interaction
- Calcium supplement, antacids, and some oral medications interfere with absorption
- NSAID and aspirin interaction
- Impact of mineral oils, orlistat, and bile acid sequestrants on vitamin D absorption
Contraindications
- Abnormalities of the esophagus
- Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Hypocalcaemia
